Heavy Metal: Sculptor Joe Gitterman

[nggallery id=119 template=”sliderview” display_content=”0”] Sculptor Joe Gitterman’s work is immovable and impenetrable. He’s all about capturing form in motion: billowing sails, classic knots, fleeting hope and inner strength.

He made “Healing Knot 1” for New Milford Hospital and “Healing Knot 2” for Norwalk Hospital, both in his home state of Connecticut. The sculptures are fashioned from burnished stainless steel and mounted on granite pedestals in gardens meant to imbue tranquility, solace, calm and strength. Those of us who have ever visited a loved one fighting for health know what a gift it is to come upon an image to pour our will and feelings into as we sit and ponder.

For a more lighthearted locale, Gitterman created “Half Hitch 1 & 2,” two mirrored, polished bronze half-hitch knots – inspired by classic sailors’ knots – that flank the entrance to the 900-seat theater on Escape, a newer Norwegian Cruise Lines ship.
